At the final Jane Jacobs and the Future of New York panel on Tuesday, December 4, moderator Matt Schuerman and panelists Calvin Butts, Michelle de la Uz, Ron Shiffman and Errol Louis discuss the often antagonistic relationship between neighborhood improvement, gentrification and displacement.

when he says that past and current community-benefits agreements should be the model for the future when the city government might have authority to make developers commit to a certain percentage of affordable housing etc., is he serious? How can anyone suggest that the Atlantic Yards CBA is a good example for future agreements between developers and the local community!? Ratner took advantage of the impoverished local community and cherry-picked the groups he wanted to work with, and ignored all those who demanded something more difficult to make into a catchy soundbite -- "Jobs, Housing, and Hoops" or whatever it was.
